Interaction Designer - Full time
Joining the Google Translate design team is an incredible part of my journey as an Interaction Designer. With over a billion people using Google Translate, the impact and reach of what we accomplished is massive.
While being part of a diverse and talented team, my manager, Pendar, as Director of Design, Product Managers, Developers, and Copywriters from all around the world, focused on creating seamless interactions for users across various platforms including iOS, Android, and the web. This role took me beyond App Design. I collaborated with the Creative Lab team, ideating to transform concepts into fully flushed user-centered designs.
This role allowed me to conduct extensive research across several countries, developing and testing prototypes, all while sharing data insights with the Google Translate engineering team.
I had the opportunity to play a key role in the mobile web interactions for the launch of Google Translate in China, and was actively involved in bug fixing and supporting my team in various capacities.
A highlight of my career was being a part of the "We Speak Translate" project. In collaboration with the city of Victoria, Canada, and the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria, this project focused on breaking down language barriers for refugees and immigrants. While in Victoria, I taught over 200 local business owners the ins and outs of Google Translate, empowering them to communicate better with newcomers in their city. We also provided training for refugees and immigrants, helping them use the app to integrate comfortably into their new community. The project was a huge success – businesses across the city displayed stickers and pins to show they were a Google Translate-friendly space.
Looking back on those invaluable years with Google Translate, I realize how they have profoundly shaped my approach and philosophy in design, while setting the foundation for all my endeavors since.
